Mass participation to build resilient neighbourhoods
Participatory City is all about city neighbourhoods made by everyone, for everyone! Local people have been inventing unique and innovative projects across the world.
These projects see people working together on practical ideas that make their neighborhoods more exciting and enjoyable places to live. Taken together these many ideas will create places which will be more sustainable for the future, socially, economically and environmentally. These neighbourhoods will also be created by everyone living in them - not by heroic or extraordinary efforts - but simply by doing many of the things we do in the course of going about our daily lives together, rather than alone.
1,000 people took part in the 2,500 participation opportunities created by the network of 20 projects.
Participatory City is also developing a large scale Demonstration Neighbourhood over 5 years in London. The idea of developing an approach based on participatory culture started with the observation that some innovative local projects were achieving inclusive participation. They appeared to be attracting many different types of people.
They have discovered that many people want to live in a participatory city … and they want to build it with them. Over 12 months they built a new participatory system in West Norwood, London - the first of its kind. Together with residents they designed and tested 20 new practical projects to see if they could re-organise the neighbourhood for every-day benefit, but also to be an inspiring and exciting place to live, grow ideas and projects and invent new livelihoods.
