4 returns from landscape restoration
Ecologist Willem Ferwerda is on a mission to explain how the planet, the environment, and the economy can be restored on the basis of the 4 returns model. And he doesn't stop at 'explaining'. He is actually doing it by a profound way of impact investment. He founded Commonland. They believe that landscape restoration represents large untapped opportunities for sustainable economic development: the basis of a restoration industry. Yet although many funded projects already exist, they lack the necessary scaling-up because investors, companies and entrepreneurs aren’t involved. They are building that bridge.
They design landscape restoration projects based on sustainable business cases delivering 4 returns: (1) Return of Inspiration, giving people hope, a positive future outlook and meaningfulness, (2) Return of Social Capital, bringing back jobs and business activity, education, social services and security, (3) Return of Natural Capital, restoring biodiversity, topsoil and hydrology, clearing invasive species, decreasing erosion and increasing carbon absorption, (4) Return of
Financial Capital, realizing long-term, sustainable profit with a balanced risk / return profile. To maximize the 4 returns, we apply the 3 zones landscaping principle to every landscape restoration plan, for a period of 20 years.
