Paradiso di Frassina (Italy)
Wine growing with Mozart
Anyone who comes to Paradiso in person will find themselves pleasantly surrounded by Mozart’s musical harmonies diffused, as you will already have noted when visiting this website, by a remarkable number of loud-speakers. This musical vineyard is not some silly romantic dream, but part of a long-term scientific research to see how sound waves can beneficially affect the vineyard and its vines, a project supported by the Universities of both Florence and Pisa. Paradiso di Frassina has been inhabited since at least 1,000 AD and is located 5 km (3 miles) north of Montalcino, at the foot of the Montosoli hill.
The Magic Flute is unique and inimitable Brunello. From 2008, thanks to Bose, they were able to play music to one of their Brunello vineyards (comprising 1 hectare or 2.47-acres), using 50 loud-speakers which they placed specially along each vine row. They then made sure the Brunello grapes from this “Mozart Vineyard” were fermented seperately in their winery. They decided to leave the wine from those fortunate Brunello grapes in barrel for 8 months longer than normal. That’s how Il Paradiso di Frassina’s first ‘cru’ or ‘great growth’ was born. Dedicating this wine so immersed in musical harmony to Mozart, they called it ‘The Magic Flute’. They produce only 1,500 bottles and 100 magnums of it each year.
