Islington Giving (UK)
Live local. Give Local.
Islington Giving aims to improve the lives of Islington residents by encouraging donorship of time, talents and finance by members of the local community. This ‘give as you are able’ approach has had considerable success in unlocking the capacity existing within ‘local assets’ like local businesses, public infrastructure and the skills and social networks of local community members. Islington Giving has raised £3.5 million in three and a half years and connected local businesses, schools, colleges and universities, as well as local community organisations to their pursuit of three key aims – tackling poverty, confronting isolation and investing in young people.
Some examples of Islington Giving include (1) collaborations with organisations such as Age UK to provide ‘get togethers’ and social groups to reduce isolation amongst older people across the borough, (2) the Businesses for Islington Living Alliance has managed to tap into local private sector resources and provide job opportunities for local residents and (3) the Saturday Night project provides entertaining activities for young people that are also aimed at building social capital and promoting healthy lifestyles.
