The Woman's Bakery - Rwanda
Bread as a way to change the world
The Woman's Bakery is a social enterprise, based on a loaf of bread. It exists to create access to gainful employment for women and to sell nutritious, affordable breads through profitable bakeries in East Africa. Currently this is happening through three The Woman's Bakery owned and operated bakeries in Rwanda, and one franchised bakery in Uganda. Additionally, they have trained three other bakeries in East Africa which now operate independently.
It all starts with woman. The Woman's Bakery believes that women are inherently powerful. And that when a woman has access to social and economic opportunity, the world will benefit.
In East Africa, women lack access to education, economic opportunity, and nutrition. This keeps women and their families hungry, without options, and living in survival mode. The Women’s Bakery prioritizes opportunities to combat these deficiencies.
The focus is on getting the right women in place, and creating the right breads for the local community, so that each bakery thrives long-term.
The vision of The Woman's Bakery is to empower women, because an empowered woman, by herself, is an outcome worth fighting for. They track this empowerment through three priority areas: education, economic opportunity and nutrition. Women receive 200+hours of bakery training. Women at the Kigali bakery make approximately 4x their pre-training income. 100% of the women at our bakeries
have health insurance. Right now, there are three bakeries in Rwanda and one pilot franchise bakery in Uganda.
